Why duenos?
Duenos is an old latin word meaning good. It was the opposite of duellum, bad, which later evolved into the classical latin bellum, meaning war. Calling this blog duenos recalls the birth of latin culture before Rome was even a republic, before it meant anything at all. The word duenos encapsulates a feeling of "what if?" that should be brought back to our consciousness. Our world today is no more fated than the early latins' and this blog seeks to record and report every step our civilization takes on its road to a destiny still unknown.
What is that graphic floating over on the left there?
That is the "duenos inscription" and it is one of the oldest latin texts to have been found. The text is traced around a set of vases known as kernos. They are the 4 circles you see in the middle of the image. The text itself was difficult to translate as there are no breaks in the words and the handwriting is not very clear. The best translation up to now is: "The person who sends me swears by the gods... if a girl is not kind/friendly towards you... a good man made me for a good man... let an evil person not take me."
